For me, running used to be a special time: I explored my old city (DC) through Rock Creek Park on foot running 3-5 miles every day after work and 8-10 miles on the weekends. Then I got sick, super sick, so sick I had to give up running for 6 months. I tried to jump back into it but had the hardest time finding my stride again—until recently. I up and moved to Portland, OR and was given a new city to explore and there is no better way to explore than by foot.

What are you doing today that set's it apart? How can you be better than yesterday?

What are you doing today that set’s it apart? How can you be better than yesterday?

I signed up for a 5k with a friend and ended up bailing because I was too afraid of failing. I knew I needed a better approach, a little kick in the butt to get me over that hump of fear and get out there and racing again.

This amazing gift I received from Running on the Wall was just the kick in the butt I needed. I put this race bib and running medal display in my bathroom so it’s one of the first things I see in the morning.

IMG_3362

Inspiration first thing every morning!

And guess what? I have run two 5ks in the past month, I’m back running at least 2-3 miles daily and am looking to sign up for my first 10k / half marathon before the end of the year!

My mom’s morning routine includes waking up, making coffee, and watching the news before getting ready for work. Everyone has their favorite way to wake up and start the day, mine goes a little like this: brush my teeth, do a few yoga flows, make a smoothie. When we (Fit Approach) received the opportunity to partner with Amazing Grass, I was over-the-moon excited.

url

While I was in Europe, the amazingness arrived, and so Amazing Grass was one of my first ‘welcome home’ gifts, of course following hugs from my parents. It took all of .02 seconds for me to open the package and get to the smoothie making magic…a routine I had missed while traveling for 5-weeks.

Green and pink socks, so fitting!

As a chocolate and peanut butter fanatic, I was thrilled to receive Amazing Grass’s Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein SuperFood blend. With 190 calories per serving (same as a serving of PB with double the protein) and 20 grams of plant-based protein (pea, hemp, chia, quinoa), plus two servings of fruits and veggies – ALL THE GREENS – the blend not only keeps me full to lunch, but tastes, naturally, smooth and amazing.

Like my travels, the smoothie-making adventures are documented on my Instagram, however my favorite recipe so far is shared below:

0-7

    • 1 banana
    • 1 scoop Amazing Grass SuperFood Protein, Chocolate Peanut Butter blend
    • 3/4 cup Califia Farms Unsweetened Almond Milk
    • 1/2 cup Iced Coffee
    • 1 handful spinach
    • Scoop of ice
    • 1/2 Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Picky Bar topping
    • 1/4 cup Mamma Chia Cinnamon Pecan granola

Tweet: #Vegan Smoothie #Recipe that keeps you full! @AmazingGrass @goldenbearbecky #feelamazingeverday http://ctt.ec/JhXTy+

As a dairy intolerant human, this smoothie hits the spot. I love that Amazing Grass not only tastes great but leaves my sensitive stomach super happy all day long.

How do you start your day on the right foot? What is your morning routine? Share with a comment below and with us on Instagram and Twitter (@FitApproach) tagging #FeelAmazingEveryday #SweatPink @AmazingGrass @FitApproach! Look out for a super(food) fun Instagram Challenge coming your way!

Sweat Pink love,

Becky

I recently was introduced to a article about athlete Kyle Korver from the Atlanta Hawks. Korver started a “One-Day-A-Year Fitness-Plan” in which he set a super difficult goal that would test his abilities in a foreign environment. It was a goal to do something way beyond his comfort level and that challenged every part of him. He had a “50% chance of success, at best” of completing this ‘way far out’ goal.

Korver, along with some friends, decided to share in a “sufferfest” in which they lugged a 85.2 pound rock across the bottom of the ocean in California for 5000 meters. They did this in relay form, and they called their now annual challenge a “misogi”. Misogi is a Japanese Shinto practice of ritual purification by washing the entire body. Korver and his team fulfill their misogi challenge each year and it inspired me to set my own “far out” challenge each year!

So,  I will be biking across America from Seattle, Washington to Washington D.C starting June 27th until August 14th with the Fuller Center Bike Foundation. We will be biking and building houses for the entire 2 months of this challenging ride across the country. I have never biked more than 5 miles at a time! So training has begun, yet, I don’t think I will ever be prepared for this trek! In addition to the bike ride, I have to raise a substantial amount of funds to help pay for the homes we are building along the way in our journey. So, I am now on the hunt for caring people to help donate to my journey and this amazing cause!

So this is my story: I am a humanitarian and I love to serve! I am a health and wellness enthusiast that loves to try various fitness routines and fashion! I am a food blogger, fitness blogger, world traveler, and wanderlust spirit. I also teach African Dance Workouts and am VERY involved in several different non-profit organizations. I live to inspire and aspire to LIVE and live greatly. I believe that we should all work diligently to #Live2Give!

I was excited for my last year of physical therapy school. I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. Meanwhile, I was also running well despite the grueling hours of studying, being in the clinic and school. I even PR’ed in the half marathon earlier that year. During a trip to celebrate the start of my last year of school, I slipped on wet tile and fell… HARD!

It really hurt! Not just to run, but to walk, to sit and to lay down. I gave myself a 2 week break to rest. I wanted to get back to running as soon as possible, I had my racing team depending on me. After 2 weeks, I started running despite having pain. I remember saying to myself that I can change my stride and the pain will go away. Well, 2 months later I could barely lift my leg. I couldn’t walk, swim or bike without feeling like my thigh will explode. That’s when it started, 6 years of MRIs, injections and prolotherapy. The best sports doctors didn’t know what to do with me and nothing helped. I had no answers. The injury was really life changing. I was depressed. I felt out of place. I was starting to think it was all in my head.
It also made me doubt myself as a physical therapist. How can I help others if I can’t help myself? My colleagues were telling me I should stop running. But I knew better. I knew that a 30 year old should be able to run down the street with out pain. At the time, I was still running and racing ( minimally), but had symptoms to the point where my foot started to tingle. I was starting to worry that I was hurting myself more.

I started to do MORE research on own. At the end of 2015, I had a light bulb moment. I realized it was all about form and core strength. Changing my running stride years ago to alleviate pain was HURTING me. So I focused on REALLY getting better. I took a 3 month break from running to develop my own core and work running drills. This time I wasn’t going to stop my core strengthening when I was able to run. I didn’t realized how weak my body got from the pain and change in running form. I was sore nearly every day.

I resumed running at the start of this year. I didn’t dwell on how many ( little) miles I was running or how fast (slow) I ran. I started running 2 miles a day 6 days a week with the focus on good form. I didn’t increase my miles or speed until I can hold my form easily. Then I was up to 2.5 miles then 3. I’m up to 4.5 miles a day now WITHOUT SYMPTOMS.

I want to help others run with good form to minimize injury.

So the lesson is to do core and work on form… AND…
Please never give up! Don’t let others tell you to give up. In a way, I’m glad this happened to me. It made me a better clinician and runner.

We’re so excited to share that the Sweat Pink community will be showing up and taking names in  The United Relay of America.

It’s the first ever non-stop running relay. That means that runners starting in Seattle, San Francisco, and Los Angeles will run day and night across the country and eventually all meet up in New York City. They’ll be carrying three batons over those three routes for over 10,000 miles of unbroken chains of runners.

It’s the coolest, runner-infused cocktail of community, inspiration, and giving back we can imagine.

You can probably guess what comes next: once we heard about this relay, we were hooked. MUST DO. No turning down this opportunity. Yeah, yeah, we know, #runnerprobs. 😉

Thanks to Aftershokz (the best headphones – check ’em out), we’ve got a whole crew of #sweatpink-ers and the Flex & Flow tribe signed up to be a part of the start line party in Seattle onWednesday, April 27 at 6pm (in Seward Park).

If you’ll be there (and you SHOULD be there, if Seattle is within your reach), look for the crew wearing Sweat Pink trucker hats and Aftershokz headphones.

The Seattle Sweat Pink team will be rocking Aftershokz headphones. We can’t wait to try them, because we’re convinced they’re the smartest headphones for all us sweaty, safety-conscious runners to use.

Image: Aftershokz

They use bone conduction and rest on your cheeks rather than in your ears. You can hear music, take a phone call, and totally zone out in your music and your run, but you can still hear your surroundings. Extra important when you’re running alone, or in unfamiliar areas, or, hello, through the night on a relay across America.

We also love the concept from a comfort perspective. Who, really, has found earbuds that fit well and don’t irritate once you start getting sweaty? Keeping the gear outside our ears sounds pretty darn ideal.
