Explore a new city with your workout.

Adventuring in a new city can be so exciting and equally as daunting. While Google, Yelp, and friend recommendations are plentiful and always appreciated, it can also feel overwhelming to have all of the options and must-see spots. There’s nothing quite like discovering a new city on your own without having to follow Google Maps to find that ice cream your brother’s girlfriend’s sister said will change your life. We’re definitely in favor of finding that famous ice cream or pizza shop, or that hidden trail in the mountains, and those you should definitely map out, but there’s something about leaving those things behind that which can make travel much more spontaneous and adventurous.

We’ve found there are simple and fun ways to get the most out of exploring a city, without relying on an itinerary.

1. Walk everywhere you go. Pick a morning to leave unplanned and head out the door and just walk. Put away your GPS and just take in the sights, sounds, and smells. Discover destinations that you’ve never heard of, take lots of pictures and be open to what comes your way.

2. Talk to the locals. All of your research will most likely lead you to the tourist spots in the city. Talk to people you see on the street or at a local coffee shop or restaurant. Ask them about the best food, hikes, and unknown gems in town. Chances are, there will be something or somewhere that isn’t listed online that you must experience.

3. Get your sweat on in the city. This is our favorite way to explore a new place. Go for a run and see where it takes you. Scope out fitness and yoga studios and try a new class. Let your love of fitness and exploration go hand-in-hand.

Explore a new city with a Gixo workout

When we were in Vancouver two weeks ago for the EMPOWER Vancouver Retreat, we decided to explore the city in a sweatier and less conventional way. You may have seen our new favorite way to workout is with the Gixo app – you can workout anywhere, anytime, and still get the support of a trainer and the social aspects of a fitness class – and since our retreat was all about sweat, this fitness app made the perfect adventure companion.

On Sunday morning, we all plugged in our headphones, tuned into the same Gixo class, and headed to the streets of Vancouver for an hour of sweating and exploring. We kept to the Gastown neighborhood, which is filled with historic landmarks, lots of cafes, shops, and people.

We jogged, ran, and sprinted through the streets of Vancouver.

Along the way, we found some cool murals. A stop, drop and yoga break is necessary in our minds whenever we see a mural mid-run!

We took A LOT of sweaty selfies with friends. During your Gixo workout, the app will prompt you to take a selfie on one of your breaks and even engage with the trainer and other participants.

And we stopped, dropped, and did push-ups in the middle of the busy neighborhood. We turned quite a few heads during our workout, and even got a few high-fives from strangers!

We rocked out a full-body workout with such a fun group while enjoying the sights and sounds of Vancouver – what a win-win!

How do you explore new cities or even new spots in your city? Does it involve a sweaty adventure?
