There’s always a lot of chatter about the latest algorithm updates on social media, especially about they affect your ability to increase engagement levels on Instagram.
It’s frustrating, isn’t it, to work so hard at developing a channel, but to never be 100% in control of your own success there.
This topic has been top of mind for a lot of us lately. Liz took a deep dive into how to most effectively use Instagram in 2018, and Jamie shared her top tips for what social media influencers must do to stay relevant, and today, we want to hone in on one of those: participate in community initiatives.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again (and again, and again, and again….): the key to success as a social media influencer is being an active participant in the communities you’re most connected to. It doesn’t matter whether you’re looking to amplify your presence on Instagram, learn from your fellow influencers, grow your website traffic, form more meaningful connections with your audience and followers, earn sponsored opportunities, or just keep your channels fresh and relevant – the key is participation.
No matter what twisty secret logic the current algorithm uses, her advice makes plain sense: be visible. Be engaged. Be active. It’s kind of like exercise: you can’t wish for it, you have to work for it. Here are three simple things you can do today to be more active in your community:
Join in on topical and trending hashtags
If you’re feeling stuck at a certain follower count, or uninspired to produce content, jumping in on trending hashtags or topics is a perfect way to reenergize your channel and give you some fresh content ideas.

The 30-60 minutes after you post to your grid are the sweet spot for getting engagement on your post. Choose a hashtag or two and use that window of time to furiously comment on others’ posts, to encourage them to return the favor and comment on yours. And, of course, respond immediately to any comments on your shot.
Tag brands in your posts
It seems like there’s way more focus on hashtag strategy than re-gramming strategy, but getting re-grammed by brands and followers is a proven way to gain more followers. Even if you’re not officially partnering with a brand (yet!), tag them and their products in relevant photos or as part of challenges. It’s just more visibility, and more opportunities to prove your worth if / when you decide to pitch them later.
Easy, right? No matter how time crunched you are, these are three things we can probably all find a spare minute to check off our lists.
Get started today—it’s a no brainer to try out all three of these tips during #WIAW with Great Lakes Gelatin. You don’t need to already have collagen or gelatin to participate (or even if you’re plant-based, you can still reap the benefits of a trending topic!). Plus you just might win some prizes, to the tune of Great Lakes Gelatin products and $100 cash.
