A few weeks ago I gave myself a challenge of wearing a capsule wardrobe made up entirely (well, almost entirely!) of athleisure items for 10 days. Though of course I had some lessons learned, overall, I loved the challenge. It made getting dressed so much easier in the morning, and freed up brain space for more important decisions during my day.
Since then, I’ve been mulling over where I’d go next. I knew I wanted to wait until it wasn’t just straight 90 degrees every day all day, since the lack of layering possibilities made my outfits pretty boring.
Now that Austin has a cold front moving in (it’s going to drop down to 60, y’all! #eternalsummer), I’m ready to take the plunge with a more fall-themed capsule wardrobe. This time I’m upping the ante: it’ll be a 21 day challenge, with 10 items of clothing (not including shoes, scarves, and jewelry).
This time around, I shopped my closet and chose the ten items based on comfort and versatility. There are a few athleisure picks but this capsule mixes in non-athleisure items, too. I tried to choose basics so that if you want to hop on into the challenge with me, you might even be able to find these things in your closet already. And lastly, most of my items are suited for warm weather, but I’ve made suggestions for cold weather options wherever possible. I’ll probably add scarves and other fall accessories into photos just to keep it interesting, even if Austin weather doesn’t enable me to wear them all day long.
Since I shopped my closet, most of my items are old and no longer available online. The ones pictured here are are close, though!
Ready to dive in? Here are (similar options to) the ten items I’ll be wearing for 21 days:
Tops & Dress
Gray dress / Striped shirt / Chambray button down / White or neutral print shirt
For cold weather, make these long sleeved and/ or sweaters. And of course add tights and boots to the dress.
Neutral pants / Black pants / Black skirt
For cold weather, add tights and boots!
Black vest / Jean jacket / Utility vest
*I borrowed this term from Putting Me Together, a fashion blog where I’ve drawn a lot of inspiration for capsule wardrobes!
For cold weather, do a quilted or down vest, and a utility jacket instead of a vest. And of course, add outerwear!
Looking at all of these items together, I realize why I’ve struggled to make capsule wardrobes work before. I am a person who LOVES prints and color. I am always in a better mood when I’m mixing prints and especially when one of those prints is leopard. This capsule, though, is super tame: it’s basically a collection of neutrals. So my challenge will not only be to only wear these items, but also to find ways to make them interesting and fun, and more ‘me’ through accessories.
