As I’ve turned it up on my workouts and started pushing harder, I’ve learned the importance of taking a day off. Without a day between tough workouts, I’m really not able to do the second day workout justice. I’m definitely more tired, struggling to push my stiff muscles, and more often than not, than not my brain is my enemy, saying “didn’t we just do this?”
I’m learning to love my rest days. It feels great to catch two hours more sleep or not plan my day around when I’m going to the gym. By mid-day, I’m feeling the familiar twitch in my body to be active. So I’ll take a walk along the Embarcadero at lunch, plan a weekend hike, or walk up one of many large SF hills rather than take the bus, because moving my body is the best cure for slightly sore muscles. And taking a day off gives my body time to recover.
And after a rest day, I’ve had a mental recovery as well. I’m excited and engaged to return to my workout and see can I lift something heavier, get in one more rep, see if my balance has improved, or if my pesky tight hip has become anymore flexible.
How do your mind and body respond to rest days? What are your favorite rest day activities to get you gently moving your muscles?
