My Aha moment happened on March 12, 2012, but let me rewind a couple years first. Near the end of 2008 I participated in a health fair at work. It included blood pressure check, weight, blood sugar and cholesterol levels. When I got my results, my heart sank. My blood pressure and sugar was in the high range and the scale flashed 201. I knew I was out of shape and not eating healthy, but that number wasn’t what I expected. From then on I started to work on changing my eating habits and trying to be active. I would jog with my brother, on average about the 5k distance. I never measured time/pace/distance, I just jogged. Over time I managed to lose about 20 pounds which continued to fluctuate up and down.
Fast forward to 2011, still jogging/running but still only averaging around the 5k distance. My aunt, who had recently started participating in races, asked me on several occasions to run in some races with her. I turned down the invitation. I did not see the purpose in organized races and had no clue what it all involved. Christmas 2011, my aunt came up to me holding a piece of paper and sporting a huge smile. She handed me the paper and told me to get ready because in 3 months I was going to run my very first race! Not just any race, but a 15k. My longest run was probably about 4 miles. She had signed me up and paid for the race, so I figured I would do it once to make her happy. What I didn’t know was on March 12, 2012, my life would be forever changed! The crowd cheering you on throughout the race, the energy from the other runners, the live bands playing at certain checkpoints along the route, it was an amazing experience.
So 4 years and 50 pounds later, I have several 5k and 10k races under my belt, along with a few 10 milers, 4 half marathons and 1 full marathon done! Running and fitness has changed my life. I’m happier and healthier and ready to help others out there who may be struggling in life!!!
