Sun Safety Tips for Runners

It’s the final day of Running Safety Month, and we’re sharing all of our run safety tips to #KeepRunningWild throughout the summer!  Whether you’re new to hitting the pavement or an ultramarathon pro, today’s post is important for everyone.

With longer, warmer, and sunnier days, chances are high that you’re spending more time outdoors (I certainly am!). However, it’s not all fun in the sun: skin cancer is on the rise. In fact, more than 1.2 million new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed each year in the US and melanoma takes the life of one person every hour. Sadly, that bronze glow you’re so eager to achieve is a sign of skin damage. Thankfully, there are ways to protect yourself and still tan … a la Jergens. Here are our top tips for protecting your skin this summer.

Time It Right

The biggest impact you can make on your sun exposure is your timing. Run early or late in the day - you’ll beat the heat and avoid the sun’s rays when they are strongest (10am to 4pm). Did you know that concrete, sand, and water reflect 85% to 90% of the sun's UV rays? If you can’t avoid the sun’s strongest hours, choose to run in the shade.

Wear Sunscreen Daily

Always protect your body's largest organ - even if it’s just a quick 20-minute run through the neighborhood or a short jog to the store. For liquid sunscreen, we love Goddess Garden, a natural sunscreen that is free of oxybenzone, parabens and synthetic fragrances. This sunscreen is great for everyone, including those with sensitive skin.

{PSA: Do NOT use expired sunscreen. It does not work to protect your skin. However, it is an excellent option for shaving cream. #lifehack}

For powdered sunscreen, try Sweat Cosmetics, whose cute and convenient packaging makes it fun to throw in your summer beach bag. (Psst...You can use code SWEATPINK for 10% off your purchase!) If you're looking for an everyday moisturizer with SPF, we're pretty obsessed with PROTECT ME from FRÉ Skincare. It's sweat resistant, which means it won't trickle down your face and burn your eyes. It's designed for women who sweat - or should we say sweat pink?

Grab Your Hat

You’ll catch us rocking our Sweat Pink trucker hats on our way to yoga, at the gym, and especially when we run. Sunscreen is just one part of the equation. Wearing a shirt and hat also helps protect your face and back against the sun.

Embrace the Faux Glow

I admit: I still want that glow without the skin damage. Since Jergens revamped its formula a few years ago, I actually really enjoy the lotion's light scent. Slather it on after you hop out of the shower, wash your hands, and you're good to go!
