We all have those amazingly fun and ridiculous vacations where just about everything healthy goes out the window. I just got back from one of those epic weekends: a bachelorette party in Vegas. It was a challenge keeping a healthy balance but, considering the circumstances, I think I did pretty well!
Let’s start with the fun stuff: the booze and food bender! There was the pre-party in the hotel room, and the nights in the clubs until 4am. There were meals of enchiladas, McDonald’s, pizza, hot dogs, sliders, fries and a four-hour trip to the buffet. At the time, an unlimited champagne brunch seemed like the best recovery option for Sunday. And it wasn’t just champagne: there was also prime rib, Belgian waffles, crab legs with drawn butter, and three trips through the fantasyland dessert buffet. It was all the things that a vacation bender is supposed to be–ladies, don’t do this at home!
Despite all the indulging, my body did still tell me what it needed. I had a large salad of greens, apples and walnuts with that pizza. I piled my plate with carrots, asparagus, fresh strawberries and melon at that buffet. And on Saturday, I did a recovery workout–I do love checking out new gyms, trying new equipment, and shaking up my routine. It was certainly far from the toughest or strongest workout ever, but I did 30 minutes on the elliptical, tried four new machines, and did my usual 20 minutes of abs and stretching. Not bad for Vegas. And walking through the Vegas hotel casino with no makeup, a ponytail, and sweaty workout clothes was certainly memorable. I got just as much attention in that outfit as I did in my more traditional Vegas looks that weekend.
And then on Sunday my body taught me more about balance. While we rehashed the weekend at the airport, all agreeing that it was truly an epic trip, I was the first to speak up and say I love my life at home, and am excited to get back to it. I had a wonderful night’s sleep in my own bed and woke up craving water, and healthy food. I had fruit and granola on top of yogurt, a quinoa bowl with veggies and tofu for lunch, and a homecooked meal for dinner. And then, back to bed!
So yes, I went on an incredible bender in Vegas. But my body also craves the healthy choices I make most days. And that is what finding balance is all about.
