When you hear the phrase “dream team,” what do you picture? A group of best friends with perfectly meshed personalities? A sports team that takes the gold?
That sounds accurate: The technical definition reads “a team of people perceived as the perfect combination for a particular purpose.”
But when it comes to Ragnar Relays, we think there’s a more specific definition. Every Ragnar team should consist of a special group of people who contribute to the team’s success in unique ways — it’s these eight you need.
1. The one who brings all the gear
Almost undoubtedly, someone will forget something. That’s why you need an experienced camper on your Ragnar team — someone who will bring the camp stove, extra flashlight batteries, canteens for all, and a seemingly endless supply of hand sanitizer.
This person will help you set up your tent, organize sleeping bags, and make sure everyone knows where to find all of the necessities. Oh, and they’ll probably have all of these cool trail-ready gadgets, too.
2. The one who will run the Red Loop in the middle of the night
A Ragnar might be a relay, but that definitely doesn’t mean it’s easy. This runner will take one for the team and complete the hardest leg at night so you and the rest of your mates can rest and recharge for the morning.
3. The one who brings all the snacks
What’s a camping trip (or a race) without snacks? A lot less fun than it is with snacks, we can tell you that much. When you’re hanging out at the campsite in between meals at the village, and after you’ve tried all the vendor samples, every dream team needs a teammate who can seemingly pull snacks out of thin air. Need some nut butter? This person’s got it. Beef jerky? Got it. Full-on cheese-and-cracker plate? Got it!
4. The one who takes all the pictures
We’re firm believers that there’s no such thing as too many pictures. When you’re an avid adventurer, it can be hard to remember every event, every scene in picture-perfect detail — especially when you’re sleep deprived. This runner is the paparazzi of your Ragnar team, snapping at any opportunity to preserve the memories.
5. The one who tells great stories
Want to hear about trail moments of glory (and perhaps a trail nemesis? *ahem* sneaky tree roots…). This racer is your guy/gal. You’ll be spending a fair amount of time at your campsite, and with no electricity or wifi (catch ya later, Netflix), you’ll need some old-fashioned entertainment. This person will keep things interesting with blasts from the past and maybe some corny jokes.
6. The one who’s the life of the party!
This person makes late nights fun by kicking off ghost stories or other late-night campsite shenanigans. Always up for games by the campfire, you can count on this teammate to keep your team energized even into the wee hours of the morning.
7. The one who needs a little glam at all times
Decorating your campsite and donning funny costumes is half the fun at a Ragnar Relay (bonus points if your teammates all match). This runner will take your Ragnar campsite to the next level and organize outfits for everyone. If there was a costume contest, this teammate would win it—you never know if you’ll get rewarded!
8. The one who’s also a coach
Everyone needs someone to turn to when in need of a little motivation — this runner has your back. This racer is critical to the overall team morale: when someone starts to struggle, the coach picks them back up and reminds them they can do anything.
