Two weeks ago, we all took part in the Sparkling Detox challenge, meaning we only drank sparkling water for a whole week.
Going for a whole week without coffee was a big, big deal. (Okay, I cheated on that front, but a lot of people in our Facebook group really committed to going caffeine-free).

After the challenge ended, I had a little bit of guilt about my caffeine-related indiscretions. I mean, clearly not enough to change my behavior, but … well, let’s just say that after hearing about everyone else’s stories of success in forgoing caffeine for a week, I was disappointed in myself for giving up so easily.
Yes, I’m 100% an addict. I am comfortable with this vice.
But. I decided to experiment a little. I usually have coffee twice a day: once when I wake up to feel human, and then again when I sit down to start work, to help with my focus and ability to process semi-complex thoughts.
The coffee upon waking is necessary. Only morning sickness has ever been able to banish that desire from my body and soul. But the second coffee, the one that’s all about focus: that one I could play with. It’s not so much necessary as it is a nice boost. I get a lot more done with some rocket fuel in my system.
So last week, I decided to try another little experiment (if it seems like experiments are my jam right now, ding ding ding you are correct!).
I replaced my second coffee of the day with Amazing Grass Brain Elixir, which is a blend of adaptogenic herbs and greens that “help support cognitive health, concentration & mental clarity.”
That description had me sold. So for Monday–Friday last week, I swapped out my second cold brew for a dose of Brain Elixir.
Let me be real upfront with you here: based on the reviews I’ve seen, the Brain Elixir is pretty polarizing in terms of taste. I really enjoy the flavors of the other two elixirs Amazing Grass just came out with: Belly and Beauty. They’re herbaceous, sort of refreshing, and just slightly sweet (and I have a super low tolerance for sweetened beverages). The Brain Elixir wasn’t so much my speed in terms of taste, so on day two, I started adding it to my smoothie with Amazing Grass’ Chocolate Peanut Butter Protein Superfood and that was a win.
If you find yourself in the “love it” camp, then by all means, add to water, stir, and let the focus begin! If you’re in the eh, not so much camp, give it a second spin in a smoothie. It’s worth it.
Okay. Back to the reason we’re here: FOCUS.
I am pleased to report that the Brain Elixir was an excellent substitute for my second coffee of the day. It woke me up and focused my attention, without the jitteriness or queasy stomach that coffee can sometimes bring. (For you mere mortals, anyway. I have been in training for so long I am basically impervious to caffeine at this point.) It even fueled my content-batching strategy to get all of my writing done for this week, including, ahem, this post!
