In my mind I was a fitness model; I was surely going to be featured in a Nike Women’s Ad campaign looking all fit and kick-ass. I had my workout regimen and diet working together.
I had been doing well for a long time. I could sprint up steps, lift heavy weights with the big boys and even began to develop a six pack. My metabolism burned off everything I ate and it was easier to go shopping for new clothes because things fit better. Now as I type, I look down and I see extra belly and thighs that weren’t there a few months ago, literally a few months ago. What the heck happened?!
I got bored with working out is what happened. I was no longer motivated to go to the gym and get my sweat on. I also allowed life to get in the way, I let relationship and family drama disrupt me, instead of reaching for my gym bag, I’d reach for sugary snacks to take my mind off things. To make things worse, my motivation to go to the gym died right before the holiday season, so I had no discipline as I would eat extra macaroni at Thanksgiving, Christmas butter cookies for breakfast and sip on multiple coquitos; let’s not even talk about all the holiday party feasts.
I’ve been here before, the point where I can visibly see I need to get back to the gym, the moment when my clothes fit a little tighter and I have no money to go buy a whole new wardrobe. I have no choice but to get it together.
Many people go through what has happened to me, even the best athletes in the world burn out. The key is to switch things up. I have decided to make working out fun again and to be active outside the gym. I’m looking into dance classes as my primary outside-the-gym work. I’d get to drop it like it’s hot and burn calories? Yes please!(Check out my Pole Dancing for Fitness post here). I will also tweak other things like to walk more, stay hydrated and figure out a way to control my sweet tooth.
I hope this is the last time I lose motivation to stay fit.
